SECTION 1: General regulations

  1. The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) allocates the places available in the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management in accordance with the following provisions.

  2. If admission numbers are specified for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management in accordance with the applicable ordinance of the Ministry of Science on the determination of admission numbers at universities (Zulassungszahlenverordnung - ZZVO), an admission procedure and, if necessary, a selection procedure will take place. If the number of applicants who fulfill the admission requirements as defined in §§ 2 to 5 exceeds the total number of places available, a selection procedure as defined in §§ 6 to 7 will take place following the admission procedure. Otherwise, only an admission procedure as defined in paragraph 3 will take place.

  3. If no admission numbers have been set for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management in accordance with the applicable admission number ordinance (ZZVO), an admission procedure will take place. In this case, the admission decision is made on the basis of the admission requirements set out in the following provisions (§§ 2 to 5). A selection procedure does not take place.
  1. Admission is granted for both the winter and summer semesters.

  2. If admission numbers for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have been set by the applicable ZZVO, the application for admission, including all required documents, must be submitted in writing.
    • for the winter semester by July 15 of each year (cut-off deadline)
    • for the summer semester by January 15 of each year (cut-off deadline)
    must be received by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). If no admission numbers have been set for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the deadlines mentioned are not cut-off deadlines.

  1. The form of the application is based on the general provisions applicable to the admission procedure in the currently valid admission and enrollment regulations of KIT.
  2. The application must be accompanied by the following documents:
    1. a copy of the proof of the Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree according to § 5 para. 1 no. 1 including Diploma Supplement (if available) and transcript of records/excerpt of grades, stating the (provisional) overall grade to be determined on the basis of the study and examination achievements to date, the credit points/ECTS earned (to date) and the total number of credit points for the degree program,
    2. Proof of the minimum achievements specified in § 5 Para. 1 No. 2, from which the course content is derived, e.g. module and course descriptions,
    3. If applicable, proof that the applicant is among the top 10 percent of graduates in his/her graduating year in the qualifying degree program; the proof must be issued by an official body (e.g. student office or examination board) and must be signed or submitted to KIT as an electronic document with a qualified electronic signature;
    4. if the minimum knowledge and minimum performance required in accordance with § 5 Para. 1 No. 2 is proven by additional achievements that are not anchored in the curriculum of the qualifying degree program, proof of freedom from overlap in accordance with § 5 Para. 1 No. 2 by means of a certificate from the responsible department at the university at which the additional credit points were acquired, e.g. the examiner, the examination office or the head of the department,
    5. a curriculum vitae in tabular form,
    6. A declaration from the applicant stating whether he/she has definitively failed an examination required by the examination regulations in the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management or a related degree program with essentially the same content, or whether he/she is no longer entitled to take the examination for other reasons,
    7. proof of sufficient language skills in accordance with § 5 paragraph 1 number 4
    8. any additional documents specified in the respective admission and matriculation regulations.
    KIT may require that the original documents on which the admission decision is based be submitted at the time of enrollment.
  3. Admission to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering can also be applied for if the Bachelor's degree has not yet been obtained by the end of the application deadline within the meaning of § 2 and it is to be expected that the applicant will complete the Bachelor's degree program in good time before the start of the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering on the basis of the course of study to date, in particular the previous study and examination achievements. In this case, the provisional average grade according to paragraph 2 no. 1 can be taken into account in the admission and selection decision. The applicant will only take part in the admission and selection procedure with the proven average grade. The subsequent result of the Bachelor's degree will be disregarded. The application must be accompanied by a certificate of the study and examination achievements completed by the end of the application deadline (e.g. transcript of records).
  4. If, by the end of the application deadline in accordance with § 2, the applicant has not yet provided full proof of the practical work experience(s) in accordance with paragraph 2 no. 4 and it can be expected on the basis of his/her previous career that the practical work experience(s) will be completed in good time before the start of the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management, the applicant may nevertheless apply for admission to the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management. The application must be accompanied by a certificate of the practical work experience(s) completed by the end of the application deadline.
  1. The form of the application is based on the general provisions applicable to the admission procedure in the respective valid admission and enrollment regulations of KIT.
  2. The following documents must be enclosed with the application:
    1. a copy of the proof of the Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree according to § 5 para. 1 no. 1 including Diploma Supplement (if available) and transcript of records/excerpt of grades, stating the (provisional) overall grade to be determined on the basis of the study and examination achievements to date, the credit points/ECTS earned (to date) and the total number of credit points for the degree program,
    2. Proof of the minimum achievements specified in § 5 Para. 1 No. 2, from which the course content is derived, e.g. module and course descriptions,
    3. [The following number 3 is inserted after number 2 - amendment to the statutes of 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 1a)] if applicable, proof that the applicant is among the top 10 percent of graduates of his/her graduating year in the qualifying degree program; the proof must be issued by an official body (e.g. student office or examination board) and must be signed or submitted to KIT by means of an electronic document bearing a qualified electronic signature;
    4. [Number 3 becomes number 4 - amendment to the statutes of 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 1a)] 3. if the minimum knowledge and minimum performance required in accordance with Section 5 Para. 1 No. 2 are proven by additional achievements that are not curricularly anchored in the qualifying degree program, proof of freedom from overlap in accordance with Section 5 Para. 1 No. 2 by means of a certificate from the responsible department at the university at which the additional credit points were acquired, e.g. the examiner, the examinations office or the head of department,

      [Number 4 is deleted - amendment to the statutes dated November 28, 2023 Article 1 Number 1b)]proof of practical professional experience in accordance with Section 5 (1) No. 3,
    5. a curriculum vitae in tabular form,
    6. in writing[will be deleted - amendment to the statutes of November 28, 2023 Article 1 number 1c)] Declaration by the applicant as to whether he/she has definitively failed an examination required by the examination regulations in the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management or a related degree program with essentially the same content or whether he/she is no longer entitled to take the examination for other reasons,
    7. Proof of sufficient German language skills in accordance with the provisions of the KIT Admission and Matriculation Regulations in the currently valid version and[to be amended - amendment to the statutes of November 28, 2023 Article 1 number 1d)] proof of sufficient language skills in accordance with Section 5 (1) number 4,
    8. any additional documents specified in the respective admission and enrollment regulations.

    KIT may require that the documents on which the admission decision is based be submitted in the original upon enrollment.
  3. Admission to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering can also be applied for if the Bachelor's degree has not yet been obtained by the end of the application deadline within the meaning of § 2 and it is to be expected that the applicant will complete the Bachelor's degree program in good time before the start of the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering on the basis of the course of study to date, in particular the previous study and examination achievements. In this case, the provisional average grade according to paragraph 2 no. 1 can be taken into account in the admission and selection decision. The applicant will only take part in the admission and selection procedure with the proven average grade. The subsequent result of the Bachelor's degree will be disregarded. The application must be accompanied by a certificate of the study and examination achievements completed by the end of the application deadline (e.g. transcript of records).
  4. If, by the end of the application deadline in accordance with § 2, the applicant has not yet provided full proof of the practical work experience(s) in accordance with paragraph 2 no. 4 and it can be expected on the basis of his/her previous career that the practical work experience(s) will be completed in good time before the start of the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management, the applicant may nevertheless apply for admission to the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management. The application 201 must be accompanied by a certificate of the practical work experience(s) completed by the end of the application deadline.


  1. In order to prepare the admission and selection decision, the KIT Faculty of Business Administration and Economics will appoint at least one admission and selection committee consisting of at least two members of the full-time academic staff. A student representative may participate in the admission and selection committee meetings in an advisory capacity. The Dean of Studies or a representative appointed by him/her chairs the committee.
  2. In the event that several admissions and selection committees are formed due to high numbers of applicants, a joint meeting will be held at the beginning of the admissions and selection procedure to coordinate the assessment criteria under the chairmanship of the Dean of Studies.
  3. The Dean of Studies reports to the KIT Faculty Council after completion of the allocation procedure on the experience gained and makes suggestions for the further development of the admission and selection procedure.

  1. Prerequisites for admission to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management:
    1. A Bachelor's degree or at least an equivalent degree from a university, university of applied sciences, university of cooperative education or a foreign university in an economics, engineering or computer science degree program. The degree must have been completed within a standard period of study of at least three years and with a minimum number of 180 ECTS credits;
    2. the required minimum knowledge and minimum achievements in the fields of mathematics and/or statistics amounting to 20 credit points; proof must be provided by means of qualifications with different content (no overlap); achievements that are primarily designed to put basic mathematical and statistical knowledge into practice (application-oriented achievements) as well as seminar papers and theses will not be considered;

      Applicants who cannot provide evidence of the required minimum knowledge and minimum performance of 20 credit points, but at least 15 credit points, can still be admitted to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management if they are among the top 10 percent of graduates in their graduating year in the qualifying degree program.

      If the qualifying Bachelor's degree program is not a degree program in industrial engineering, business informatics, business mathematics or digital economics, at least 20 credit points in engineering and/or computer science subjects and at least 20 credit points in economics subjects are also required. Applicants who cannot provide evidence of 20 credit points each, but at least 15 credit points each, can still be admitted to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management if they are among the top 10 percent of graduates in their graduating year in the qualifying degree program;
    3. that they have not definitively failed an examination required by the examination regulations in the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management or a related degree course with essentially the same content and that they are still entitled to take the examination for other reasons,
    4. sufficient knowledge of German and English in accordance with the provisions of the KIT admission and enrollment regulations as amended;
  2. The equivalence of the Bachelor's degree, the equivalence of other degree programs not expressly mentioned in paragraph 1 no. 1 and the determination of degree programs with essentially the same content within the meaning of paragraph 1 no. 4 shall be decided by the Admissions and Selection Committee of the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management in consultation with the Examination Board of the Bachelor's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management. When recognizing foreign degrees, the recommendations of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the agreements within the framework of university partnerships must be observed.
  3. The admission and selection committee decides on the existence of the required prior achievements mentioned in paragraph 1 no. 2 as well as on the equivalence and subject-related assignment of the study and examination achievements. The required documents (e.g. transcript of records, module descriptions) must be enclosed with the application by the applicant. For degree programs that do not comply with the ECTS guidelines (ECTS grades and credit points), the Admissions and Selection Committee will decide whether the requirements specified in paragraph 1 no. 2 have been met.
  1. Prerequisites for admission to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management are
    1. a passed Bachelor's degree or at least an equivalent degree from a university, university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education or from a foreign university in the degree program Industrial Engineering, Technical Economics, Technically Oriented Business Administration, Information Management, Business Informatics or Business Mathematics;the course must have been completed within a standard period of study of at least three years and with a minimum number of 180 ECTS credits;[to be amended - amendment to the statutes of 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 2a)] a Bachelor's degree or at least an equivalent degree from a university, university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education or at a foreign university. Cooperative State University or at a foreign university in an economics, engineering or computer science degree program. The degree must have been completed within a standard period of study of at least three years and with a minimum number of 180 ECTS credits;
    2. minimum required knowledge and minimum achievements in the fields of mathematics and/or statistics amounting to 25[to be amended - amendment to the statutes dated 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 2b)] 20 credit points; proof must be provided by means of qualifications with different content (no overlap); achievements that focus on the practical implementation of basic mathematical and statistical knowledge (application-oriented achievements) as well as seminar papers and theses are not taken into account;

      [Amendment to the statutes of 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 2b)] Applicants who cannot provide evidence of the required minimum knowledge and minimum performance of 20 credit points, but at least 15 credit points, may nevertheless be admitted to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management if they are among the top 10 percent of graduates of their graduating year in the qualifying degree program.

      If the qualifying Bachelor's degree program is not a degree program in industrial engineering, business informatics, business mathematics or digital economics, at least 20 credit points in engineering and/or computer science subjects and at least 20 credit points in economics subjects are also required. Applicants who cannot provide evidence of 20 credit points each, but at least 15 credit points each, can still be admitted to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management if they are among the top 10 percent of graduates in their graduating year in the qualifying degree program;
    3. [Number 3 is deleted - amendment to the statutes dated November 28, 2023 Article 1 Number 2c)] 3. proof of practical professional activity/activities with exclusively commercial and/or technical content, within the framework of a) professional internships with a minimum duration of 12 weeks and a continuous weekly working time of at least 20 hours, including the professional internships proven for the Bachelor's degree program, or b) a continuous professional practice with a minimum duration of § 5 para. 1 No. 2 a), in relation to a non-mandatory relevant professional qualification or c) at least two years of non-academic professional training according to IHK or equivalent standards; other forms of employment (e.g. working student activities, self-employment) are generally not recognized; in case of doubt, the selection committee will decide;
    4. [Number 4 becomes number 3 - amendment to the statutes of 28 November 2023 Article 1 number 2c)] 3. that there is no final failure of an examination required by the examination regulations in the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management or a related degree program with essentially the same content and that the right to take the examination still exists for other reasons,
    5. [Number 5 becomes number 4 - amendment to the statutes dated November 28, 2023 Article 1 number 2d)] 4. for applicants whose native language is not German, proof of sufficient knowledge of the German language in accordance with the requirements of the admission and enrollment regulations of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is required. [is amended - amendment to the statutes of November 28, 2023 Article 1 number 2d)] sufficient knowledge of German and English in accordance with the provisions of the admission and enrollment regulations of KIT in the currently valid version;
  2. The equivalence of the Bachelor's degree, the equivalence of other degree programs not expressly mentioned in paragraph 1 no. 1 and the determination of degree programs with essentially the same content within the meaning of paragraph 1 no. 4 shall be decided by the Admissions and Selection Committee of the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management in consultation with the Examination Board of the Bachelor's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management. SECTION 2: Selection procedure

  1. If the admission numbers for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management are determined by the applicable ZZVO and the number of applicants who meet the admission requirements specified in § 5 para. 1 exceeds the total number of places available, the selection is made according to the following provisions.
  2. Only those who
    • a) has applied for a study place in due time and form and
    • b) fulfill the admission requirements according to § 5 para. 1.
  3. The admissions and selection committee will draw up a ranking list of applicants who meet the admission requirements based on the overall grade of the final academic examination (maximum 60 points) and the study and examination achievements in the subjects of mathematics and statistics (maximum 30 points) in accordance with § 7 (maximum 90 points in total).
    The points awarded by the admissions and selection committee in accordance with § 7 are added together to form a total score (max. 90 points), with 25 being the worst and 90 the best result to be achieved. The total score is to be calculated to one decimal place. It is not rounded.
  4. In the event of a tie, the ranking is determined by the average grade of the university degree that is a prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree program. If there is still a tie, the decision is made by lot.
  1. If admission numbers for the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management are determined by the applicable ZZVO and the number of applicants who meet the admission requirements specified in Section 5 (1) exceeds the total number of places available, the selection will be made in accordance with the following provisions.
  2. Only those who
    • a) has applied for a study place in due time and form and
    • b) fulfill the admission requirements according to § 5 para. 1.
  3. The admissions and selection committee will draw up a ranking list of applicants who meet the admission requirements based on the overall grade of the final academic examination (maximum 60 points) and the study and examination achievements in the subjects of mathematics and statistics (maximum 30 points) in accordance with § 7 (maximum 90 points in total).
    The points awarded by the admissions and selection committee in accordance with § 7 are added together to form a total score (max. 90 points), with 25 being the worst and 90 the best result to be achieved. The total score is to be calculated to one decimal place. It is not rounded.
  4. In the event of a tie, Section 6 (4) sentence 4 HZG applies. [ Article 1 number 3] In the event of equal ranking, the ranking is determined by the average grade of the university degree that is a prerequisite for admission to the Master's degree program. If there is still a tie, the decision is made by lot.
  1. A maximum total of 90 points is awarded for coursework and examinations completed to date and the overall grade of the final academic examination.
  2. A maximum of 60 points will be awarded for the overall grade of the final academic examination. The conversion and evaluation of the overall grade is based on guidelines that are determined by the admissions and selection committee prior to the selection procedure.
  3. The study and examination achievements in mathematics and/or statistics up to 30 credit points will be assessed with one point per credit point. Credit points in the aforementioned sense are also ECTS points.

SECTION 3: Authorization decision and final provisions

  1. The decision on admission is made by the President based on the proposal of the Admissions and Selection Committee. If the number of applicants qualified in accordance with § 5 exceeds the total number of available study places, the selection and admission decision is made on the basis of the ranking list drawn up in accordance with § 6 para. 3 and 4.
  2. Admission shall be refused if
    • a) the application documents have not been submitted on time as defined in § 2 or have not been submitted in full as defined in § 3,
    • b) the requirements set out in § 5 are not fulfilled,
    • c) a previous admission to the same degree course or a degree course with essentially the same content has lapsed because an examination has been definitively failed or the right to take an examination no longer exists (Section 32 (5) LHG).
  3. In the case of § 3 para. 3, admission is granted subject to the proviso that proof of the Bachelor's degree is submitted immediately, at the latest two months after the start of the semester for which admission was applied for. If proof is not provided by the deadline, admission to the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management will be revoked.

    If no admission figures have been set for the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management in accordance with the ZZVO, enrolment can be granted subject to the proviso that the final proof of the Bachelor's degree is submitted immediately, at the latest two months after the start of the semester for which enrolment has been applied for. If the proof is not provided by the deadline, the assurance expires and enrollment will not take place.

    If the applicant is not responsible for missing the deadline, he or she must prove this to the Examination Board in writing. In justified individual cases, the Examination Board may extend the deadline for submitting the final proof.
  4. In the case of § 3 Para. 4, admission is granted subject to the proviso that proof of the practical work experience(s) is submitted immediately, at the latest two months after the start of the semester for which admission is to be granted. If the proof is not provided, admission to the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management will be revoked. If no admission figures have been set for the Master's degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management in accordance with the ZZVO, enrolment can be granted subject to the proviso that proof of practical work experience is submitted immediately, at the latest two months after the start of the semester for which enrolment has been applied for. If the proof is not provided by the deadline, the assurance expires and enrollment will not take place.
  5. If the applicant is not admitted after the selection procedure has been carried out, he/she will be informed of the result of the selection procedure in writing. The decision must be substantiated and include information on legal remedies.
  6. Minutes must be taken of the admission and selection procedure.
  7. Otherwise, the general provisions of the admission and matriculation regulations of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) remain unaffected.

  1. These statutes come into force on the day after their publication in the official announcements of KIT. Subject to § 3 para. 2 no. 4 and § 5 para. 1 no. 3, it applies for the first time to the application procedure for the summer semester 2021. Due to the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic, § 3 para. 2 no. 4 and § 5 para. 1 no. 3 will apply for the first time in the application procedure for the summer semester 2022.
  2. At the same time, the statutes for the university's own admission and selection procedure for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management dated December 16, 2014 (Official Announcement of KIT No. 59 dated December 17, 2014) shall cease to apply.
  1. These statutes enter into force on the day after their publication in the Official Announcements of KIT. Subject to § 3 para. 2 no. 4 and § 5 para. 1 no. 3, it applies for the first time to the application procedure for the summer semester 2021. Due to the restrictions caused by the corona pandemic, § 3 para. 2 no. 4 and § 5 para. 1 no. 3 will apply for the first time in the application procedure for the winter semester 2021/22 [will be amended - amendment to the statutes of July 22, 2021 Article 1] summer semester 2022.
  2. At the same time, the statutes for the university's own admission and selection procedure for the Master's degree program in Industrial Engineering and Management dated December 16, 2014 (Official Announcement of KIT No. 59 dated December 17, 2014) shall cease to apply.
