I. General provisions

The diploma examination forms the professional qualification of the Industrial Engineering and Management degree program.

If the diploma examination is passed, the degree "Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieur" or "Diplom-Wirtschaftsingenieurin" (abbreviated to "Dipl.-Wi.-Ing.") is awarded.

(1 ) The degree program is divided into two study sections. The first study section (basic studies) is completed with the preliminary diploma examination, the second study section (main studies) with the diploma examination.

(2 ) The course content to be completed during the degree program is divided into modules, each consisting of one or more interrelated courses. The curriculum describes the type, scope and subject-related assignment of the modules, as well as the options for combining them. Modules with essentially the same course content are mutually exclusive.

(3 ) The amount of work required to complete a module is expressed in credit points.

(4 ) The standard period of study for the Industrial Engineering and Management degree course is 10 semesters. It comprises the basic studies, the main studies, a work placement and the examinations including the diploma thesis.

(5 ) The work placement lasts 26 weeks and must be completed in accordance with the faculty's guidelines.

(6 ) As a rule, the Diplom preliminary examination must be completed by the end of the fourth semester. Students who have not passed the Diplom preliminary examination, including any resits, by the beginning of the lecture period of the seventh semester shall lose their right to take the examination, unless they are not responsible for missing the deadline; the Examination Board shall decide on this at the candidate's request.

(7 ) As part of the Diplom preliminary examination, an orientation examination must be taken in accordance with § 12 Para. 3. The purpose of an orientation examination is to review the decision to study in order to be able to correct any wrong decisions at an early stage. The provisions of § 11 on the assessment of examination results shall apply. The orientation examination must be taken by the end of the examination period of the second semester. Students who have not taken the orientation examination, including any resits, by the end of the examination period of the third semester shall lose their right to take the examination, unless they are not responsible for missing the deadline; the Examination Board shall decide on this at the request of the candidate.

(8 ) The amount of coursework required for the successful completion of the degree program is measured in credit points and amounts to 120 credit points for the basic study program and 180 credit points for the main study program.

(9 ) The total amount of time required for the successful completion of the degree program is a maximum of 180 semester hours per week.

(1 ) An examination board is formed for the organization of the examinations and the other tasks assigned by the examination regulations. It shall consist of five members with voting rights: three professors, university lecturers or private lecturers (at least three of whom must be professors), at least one representative of the academic staff and one student with an advisory vote. The professors must have the majority of votes. The term of office of the student member is one year, that of the other members two years.

(2 ) In matters of the Examination Board that concern an examination to be taken at another faculty, a professor, university lecturer or private lecturer responsible for the subject and to be nominated by the faculty concerned must be consulted at the request of a member of the Examination Board; he or she has the right to vote on these matters.

(3 ) The members of the Examination Board, including the chairperson and deputy chairperson, are appointed by the Faculty Council. The representative of the academic staff and the representative of the students are appointed on the recommendation of the members of this group in the Faculty Council. The chairperson and deputy chairperson must be professors. The Chair of the Examination Board is responsible for day-to-day business. He/she may be supported by an examination secretariat to carry out his/her tasks.

(4 ) The Examination Board is responsible for all questions relating to the examination regulations. It ensures that the provisions of the examination regulations are adhered to. It reports regularly to the Extended Faculty Council on the development of examinations and study periods, including the actual completion times for the diploma thesis, as well as on the distribution of subject and overall grades. It makes suggestions for the reform of the curricula and examination regulations.

(5 ) The members of the Examination Board have the right to attend the examinations. The members of the Examination Board, the examiners and the assessors are subject to official secrecy. If they are not in public service, they must be sworn to secrecy by the chairperson.

(1 ) The Examination Board appoints the examiners and the assessors. It may delegate the appointment to the chairperson.

(2 ) As a rule, only professors, university lecturers and private lecturers as well as those academic staff to whom the faculty council has delegated the authority to conduct examinations in accordance with Section 50 (4) sentence 3 of the Universities Act are authorized to conduct university examinations that are not conducted during the semester in connection with individual courses. Academic assistants, research assistants, lecturers and teaching staff for special tasks may only be appointed as examiners in exceptional cases if professors and university lecturers are not available to a sufficient extent.

(3 ) Only those who have passed a corresponding diploma examination or a comparable examination in an economics degree program or in the subject to be examined may be appointed as assessors.

(1 ) Periods of study, coursework and examinations in the Diplom degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management at a university or equivalent institution of higher education in Germany are credited without an equivalence assessment.
The same applies to Diplom preliminary examinations.
If passed Diplom preliminary examinations do not include subjects that are the subject of the corresponding examination at the University of Karlsruhe, recognition is possible with conditions. As a rule, only a maximum of half of the Diplom examination work to be completed can be replaced by recognized work. Recognition of the diploma thesis may be refused.

(2 ) Periods of study, coursework and examinations in other degree programs shall be credited if equivalence has been established. Equivalence shall be established if periods of study, coursework and examinations are essentially equivalent in content, scope and requirements to those of the corresponding degree program at the University of Karlsruhe. This is not a schematic comparison, but an overall consideration and assessment. When crediting periods of study, coursework and examinations completed outside Germany, the equivalence agreements approved by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder and the German Rectors' Conference as well as the agreements within the framework of university partnerships must be observed.

(3 ) Paragraphs 1 and 2 shall apply accordingly to periods of study, coursework and examinations in state-recognized distance learning courses at universities or equivalent institutions of higher education. Paragraph 2 shall also apply to periods of study, academic achievements and examination achievements at other educational institutions, in particular at state or state-recognized vocational academies as well as at technical and engineering colleges and officers' colleges of the former German Democratic Republic.

(4 ) The Examination Board shall decide on the equivalence of study and examination achievements. It shall first hear a competent subject representative. Insofar as the equivalence of study or examination achievements at foreign universities is concerned, the Central Office for Foreign Education may be consulted if there are no equivalence agreements or agreements within the framework of university partnerships.

(5 ) The Examination Board decides on the placement in a higher semester depending on the type and scope of the coursework and examinations to be credited.

(6 ) If coursework and examinations are credited, the grades will be included in the calculation of the overall grade if the grading systems are comparable. In the case of incomparable grading systems, the note "recognized" is included. The crediting shall be indicated in the certificate.

(7 ) The crediting of periods of study, coursework and examinations completed within the scope of the Higher Education Framework Act shall be carried out ex officio. The student must submit the documents required for recognition.

(1 ) An examination shall be graded as "insufficient" (5.0) if the candidate fails to appear for an examination without good reason or if he/she withdraws from the examination without good reason after the examination has begun.
The same applies if the candidate fails to complete a written examination within the specified time. Withdrawal from a written (partial) examination without giving reasons is possible until the examination papers are issued. In the case of oral examinations, withdrawal must be declared at least three working days before the relevant examination date.

(2 ) The examiner must be notified immediately in writing of the reasons given for the withdrawal or absence and these must be substantiated. In the event of illness of the candidate or a child or relative in need of care for whom the candidate is solely responsible, a medical certificate may be requested.
If the reasons are recognized, the candidate should take the examination on the next possible date. In this case, the examination results already obtained shall be taken into account.

(3 ) As a rule, expectant mothers must not take examinations in the last six weeks before giving birth and up to eight weeks after giving birth. § Section 9 (1) sentence 2 of the Maternity Protection Act (regulation for premature and multiple births) applies accordingly. The examination board shall decide on the use of the maternity protection periods at the student's request.

(4 ) If the candidate attempts to influence the result of an examination by cheating or using unauthorized aids, the examination in question shall be graded as "insufficient" (5.0). A candidate who disrupts the proper conduct of the examination can be excluded from continuing the examination by the respective examiner or invigilator; in this case, the examination in question is deemed to have been assessed as "insufficient" (5.0). In serious cases, the examination board may exclude the candidate from taking further examinations.

(5 ) The candidate may request within 14 days that the decisions according to paragraph 4 sentences 1 and 2 be reviewed by the examination board.

(6 ) Incriminating decisions by the examination board must be communicated to the candidate immediately in writing, stating the reasons and providing information on legal remedies.

(1 ) The candidate must be enrolled on the Industrial Engineering and Management course at the University of Karlsruhe at the time of admission to the Diplom preliminary examination or Diplom examination.

(2 ) The application for admission to the Diplom preliminary examination or Diplom examination must be submitted to the University's Examination Office on the prescribed form by the deadline. The application must include

  1. a brief curriculum vitae, in particular the educational background;
  2. details of the semesters of study and the universities at which they were spent.

(3 ) The following attachments must be included with the application, unless they are already available to the Student Secretariat:

  1. the certificate of general higher education entrance qualification, a relevant subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification or an entrance qualification recognized as equivalent by law or by the competent state authority;
  2. the transcript of records;
  3. the performance records required in the regulations for the Diplom preliminary examination or Diplom examination in accordance with § 13 or § 16 Para. 1;
  4. a declaration as to whether the candidate has already failed a Diplom preliminary examination, a Bachelor's or Master's examination or a Diplom examination in the Industrial Engineering and Management degree program or in comparable degree programs, is currently undergoing examination proceedings or has lost the right to take examinations in such a degree program. The Faculty Council decides on and updates the list of comparable degree programs.

(4 ) The Examination Office of the University accepts the examination registrations and, if the requirements for admission are met, issues the admission certificate for the individual (partial) examinations and the diploma thesis. By submitting this certificate of admission, the candidate registers bindingly to take the relevant examination.

(5 ) Admission may only be refused if

  1. the documents are incomplete or the requirement specified in paragraph 1 is not met,
  2. the candidate has lost the right to take an examination in one of the degree programs covered by paragraph 3 no. 4 or is currently undergoing examination proceedings,
  3. the requirements specified in § 13 or § 16 para. 1 are not fulfilled.

In cases of doubt, the Examination Board shall decide.

(6 ) If it is not possible for the candidate to enclose a document required under paragraph 3 in the prescribed manner, the Examination Board may allow proof to be provided in another way.

(1) Examinations consist of the performance assessment of the modules assigned to an examination subject to the extent provided for. As a rule, performance assessments are carried out during the teaching of the module content or shortly thereafter.

(2 ) Each module may only be credited once.

(3 ) After a positive result of the performance assessment of a module, the credit points allocated to the module shall be credited to the candidate.

(4 ) The type of assessment shall be determined by the examiner in relation to the course content and announced at least six weeks before the date of the assessment. With the agreement of the examiner and candidate, the type of assessment can also be changed at a later date.

(5 ) When registering for the performance assessment of a module, the candidate shall specify which examination subject it is assigned to, if there is a choice. Once a module has been assessed for the first time, the candidate can no longer change the module.

(6 ) For modules that are offered at least once a year, performance assessments take place every semester. For other modules, a repeat examination is offered within six months of the first assessment.

(7 ) Written work included in a performance assessment is generally assessed by two examiners, one of whom must be a professor. Oral examinations are taken and assessed by two examiners or one examiner and one assessor. The main subjects and results of the assessment are recorded. The duration of the assessment procedure should not exceed four weeks.

(8 ) Students who wish to take the same examination in a later examination period shall be admitted as listeners to oral examinations in accordance with the spatial conditions. Admission does not extend to the consultation and the announcement of the examination results. Admission shall be refused for important reasons or at the request of the examinee.

(9 ) The duration of the assessment depends on the scope of the course content assigned to the module in question. Written individual examinations last at least 60 minutes and at most 240 minutes, oral examinations at least 15 minutes per candidate.

(10 ) Insofar as examinations are to be taken in subjects from degree programs outside the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the examination regulations of the relevant degree programs shall apply with regard to the conduct of the examinations.

(1 ) Candidates may repeat a failed performance assessment once or, if this is not possible due to the rotation of the relevant courses, take part in a repeat examination. If a second written assessment or repeat examination is assessed as "insufficient", an oral re-examination shall take place at the same time as the failed examination. In this case, the assessment of the performance will be determined by the examiners of the oral examination, taking into account the written performance. Failed attempts at other universities shall be taken into account.

(2 ) The repeat examination should be taken at the next possible examination date, but must be taken within one year at the latest. If this resit deadline is missed, the examination entitlement expires, unless the candidate is not responsible for the failure.

(3 ) Second retakes of (partial) examinations are permitted in exceptional cases. The candidate must submit an application for a second retake in writing to the Examination Board. The Examination Board shall decide on the first application if it approves the second resit, otherwise the Rector shall decide. The Rector shall decide on further applications for a second resit after consulting the Examination Board. A second repetition of the diploma thesis and of examinations of the orientation examination is excluded.

(4 ) If a candidate has failed a performance assessment, he/she shall be informed of the scope and deadlines for repeat examinations in an appropriate manner.

(5 ) It is not permitted to repeat an assessment that has been passed. This does not apply to performance assessments in accordance with § 16. § 3 para. 6 and 7 remain unaffected.

(6 ) The diploma thesis may be repeated once if it is assessed as "insufficient". Returning the topic of the diploma thesis in accordance with § 17 para. 5 sentence 3 is only permitted if the candidate did not make use of this option when writing the first diploma thesis. A second repetition of the diploma thesis is excluded.

(1 ) The result of a performance assessment is determined by the respective examiners in the form of a grade.

The examination board may, in agreement with the responsible examiners, improve the subject grade achieved by a value of up to 0.4 in the Diplom preliminary examination and up to 1.0 in the Diplom examination if the deviation is due to coursework completed (e.g. coursework, seminar work) which better characterizes the candidate's level of performance and the examination has been passed anyway.

(2 ) The following grades are to be used to assess the result of a performance assessment:

1=very good=excellent performance
2=good=a performance that is significantly above the
average requirements
3=satisfactory=a performance that meets average
requirements
4=sufficient=a performance which, despite its shortcomings
still meets the requirements
5=not sufficient (failed)=a performance that does not meet the requirements
does not meet the requirements

For differentiated assessment, intermediate grades can be formed by decreasing or increasing the individual grades by 0.3; the grades 0.7, 4.3, 4.7 and 5.3 are excluded.

(3 ) In addition to the grades according to paragraph 2, ECTS grades are awarded according to the following scale:

ECTS gradeGrade*Definition
A10belongs to the top 10 % of students who have passed the performance assessment
have passed
B25Belongs to the next 25% of students who have passed the assessment

F

failed - considerable improvements are required before the
required

* Percentage of successful students who usually receive this grade

(4 ) A performance assessment is passed if the grade is at least "sufficient" (4.0).

(5 ) A subject examination is passed if the number of credit points required for the examination subject is demonstrated.
A subject examination has been definitively failed if at least one module of the subject has been definitively failed.
Within the standard period of study, including semesters on leave in accordance with § 90 Para. 1 Sentence 1 No. 1 UG, for studying at a foreign university (standard examination period), more credit points may be earned in a subject than are required to pass the subject examination. When determining the subject grade, modules are not taken into account if the required number of credit points is achieved without them and their inclusion would worsen the subject grade.

(6 ) The grades of the modules of an examination subject are included in the subject grade with a weighting proportional to the credit points awarded.

(7 ) The subject grade is

with an average of up to 1.5=very good
with an average above 1.5 to 2.5=good
with an average above 2.5 to 3.5=satisfactory
with an average above 3.5 to 4.0=

sufficient

with an average above 4.0=

not sufficient

(8 ) The Diplom preliminary examination is passed if all subject examinations according to § 12 paragraph 2 have been passed. The overall grade of the Diplom preliminary examination is calculated from the arithmetic mean of the grades according to paragraph 2 or from the unrounded weighted averages according to paragraph 6.

(9) The Diplom examination is passed if all subject grades according to § 15 paragraph 3 and the grade of the Diplom thesis are at least "sufficient" (up to 4.0).

(10 ) The overall grade of a passed Diplom examination is calculated from the weighted average of the subject grades and the assessment of the Diplom thesis. The diploma thesis is given a weighting of 2 and the examination subjects are each given a weighting of 1. If the arithmetical result of the overall grade is 1.25 or better, the overall grade "with distinction" is awarded.

(11 ) When calculating the subject grades and the overall grade, only the first decimal place after the decimal point is taken into account; all other places are deleted without rounding. The overall grade of a passed examination is

with an average of up to 1.5=very good
with an average above 1.5 to 2.5=good
with an average above 2.5 to 3.5=satisfactory
with an average above 3.5 to 4.0=

sufficient

(12 ) The subject grades and the overall grade are also shown on certificates as ECTS grades in accordance with paragraph 3.

II. preliminary diploma examination

(1 ) The Diplom preliminary examination is intended to demonstrate that the candidate has familiarized himself/herself with the scientific methods and basic content of the subject, which are necessary in order to successfully pursue further studies.

(2 ) The Diplom preliminary examination comprises the following subjects:

If the thesis is to be completed outside the faculty, this requires the approval of the Examination Board. The candidate must be given the opportunity to make suggestions for the topic. The diploma thesis may also be approved in the form of a group thesis if the contribution of the individual candidate to be assessed as an examination performance is clearly distinguishable on the basis of objective criteria that enable a clear delimitation and fulfills the requirements according to paragraph 1.

(3 ) If the requirements according to § 16 para. 2 and para. 3 are fulfilled, the chairperson of the examination board shall ensure that the candidate receives a topic for the diploma thesis from a supervisor within four weeks of submitting the application. In this case, the topic of the thesis shall be issued by the Chair of the Examination Board.

(4 ) The topic, task and scope of the thesis must be limited by the supervisor in such a way that the deadline for completion can be met.

(5 ) The completion period is 6 months. The date on which the thesis topic is issued and the date on which the thesis is submitted must be recorded. The candidate may only return the thesis topic once and only within the first two months of the completion period. Upon justified request by the candidate, the Examination Board may extend the processing time by a maximum of three months in individual cases. If the thesis is not handed in on time, it shall be graded as "insufficient" unless the candidate is not responsible for the failure to do so; Section 7 (3) shall apply accordingly.

(6) The candidate must provide the thesis with the following declaration: "I hereby declare truthfully that I have prepared the thesis independently, that I have fully and accurately stated all the aids used and that I have indicated everything that has been taken unchanged or modified from the work of others."

(7 ) The thesis is assessed by the supervisor and, as a rule, by another examiner. One of the examiners must be a professor. If the two examiners do not agree in their assessment, the Examination Board shall determine the grade of the thesis on the basis of the assessments of the two examiners. The assessment period should not exceed six weeks.

(1 ) The candidate may take an examination in subjects or modules other than those prescribed (additional subjects) until submission of the diploma thesis. § Section 3 remains unaffected.

(2 ) The result of the examination in these subjects or modules shall be included in the certificate or the annex in accordance with § 19 at the candidate's request, but shall not be included in the determination of the overall grade.

(1 ) After passing the diploma examination, the candidate receives a certificate in which the results of the examination subjects or examination areas are listed. In an appendix to the certificate, the completed modules are certified with the credit points and grades achieved. Examination achievements completed and credited at other universities are marked accordingly. The subject of the diploma thesis and its grade are also included in the certificate. The date on which the last examination was completed must be stated on the certificate. The diploma certificate is signed by the Dean and the Chair of the Examination Board and bears the seal of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics.

(2 ) If the candidate has chosen certain combinations of examinations as decided by the extended faculty council and described in the curriculum, this will be certified in the form of a certificate signed by the chairperson of the examination board after passing the diploma examination.

(3 ) Otherwise, § 14 applies accordingly.

(1 ) A diploma certificate is issued to the candidate at the same time as the certificate. This shall certify the award of the academic degree.

(2 ) The diploma certificate is signed by the Rector and the Dean and bears the seal of the University of Karlsruhe. It bears the date of the certificate.

IV Final provisions

(1 ) If the candidate has cheated in an examination and this fact only becomes known after the certificate has been issued, the examination board may subsequently correct the grades concerned accordingly and declare the examination "failed" in whole or in part.

(2 ) If the requirements for admission to an examination were not fulfilled without the candidate intending to deceive about this, and if this fact only becomes known after the certificate has been issued, this deficiency shall be remedied by passing the examination. If the candidate has intentionally obtained admission wrongly, the examination board shall decide.

(3 ) The candidate must be given the opportunity to comment before a decision is made in accordance with paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 sentence 2.

(4 ) The incorrect examination certificate must be withdrawn and a new one issued if necessary. A decision in accordance with paragraph 1 and paragraph 2 sentence 2 is excluded after a period of five years from the date of the examination certificate. The diploma certificate shall also be confiscated together with the incorrect examination certificate if the examination was declared failed due to cheating.

(1 ) Within one year of the conclusion of the examination procedure, the candidate shall be granted access to the examination files concerning him/her upon request. The chairperson of the examination board shall determine the time and place of the inspection.
If the candidate is unable to attend a scheduled inspection appointment, he/she must notify the examination board and give reasons. The examination board shall decide on a further opportunity for inspection.

(2 ) Examination documents must be kept for at least five years.

(1 ) These examination regulations come into force on October 1, 2001.

(2 ) At the same time, the examination regulations of the University of Karlsruhe for the Diplom degree course in Industrial Engineering and Management dated October 17, 1983 (W. u. K. 1984, p. 21), last amended by the statutes dated September 12, 2000 (W., F. u.
