Regulations/procedure for applying for an unscheduled engineering module

Fundamentals

In addition to the engineering modules defined in the module handbook, the examination board can also approve individually compiled engineering modules on application as part of the non-scheduled engineering module. This option is available in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Industrial Engineering and Management and Technical Economics.
When studying abroad, the extracurricular ING module is another interesting opportunity to integrate attractive courses offered by the host university into the KIT-WiWi degree program. This is made possible by the combination of the application for recognition and the APL-Ing module application.

Important rules:

  • Only one APL-Ing module may be taken in both the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs.
  • The module must comprise courses of at least 6 and at most 8 SWS and at least 9 LP and at most 12 LP.
  • The APL Engineering module in the Bachelor's degree is a specialization module that builds on engineering fundamentals acquired in the curriculum. Engineering fundamentals, including in-depth fundamentals, are therefore not included in the APL Engineering module.
  • The APL-Ing module in the Master's program is a module that contains courses that are also at Master's level from an engineering perspective. In principle, no original Bachelor's examinations are admitted to the Master's program.
  • Course combinations that are also possible in a curricular engineering module are not approved as an APL engineering module.
  • As in the regular modules in the module handbook, it is permissible to combine more courses than are required for the module examination. In this case, either individual examinations must be taken until the pass mark is reached or a corresponding selection must be agreed with the responsible examiner for an overall module examination. Once the pass mark has been reached, no further assessments are permitted in the module.
  • An excerpt from the current module handbook (WiWi-MHB or external MHB) must be attached to the application as proof of the course data (LP/SWS).
  • The Examination Board reserves the right to adjust the CP of the courses applied for to a ratio that is usual for the degree program (6 SWS - 9 CP).
  • If there are more courses to choose from than are required to complete the module examination: Compulsory courses must be designated as such. The pass mark must be shown in SWS and LP.
  • The module title agreed with the examiner must also be submitted in English.
  • The courses applied for must also be submitted with their official KIT English names.
  • Approval from the module examiner and partial performance examiner. Important formal requirements for the approval of an application are
    a) that an engineering examiner (usually the one with the highest teaching load) assumes the role of module examiner,
    b) that each examiner concerned agrees to participation in his or her examination.
The need for explicit approval by the examiner of a partial performance in the module does not apply if
=> the module examiner is responsible for the partial performance/s or a colleague at the same institute,
=> the partial performance is a curricular component of the WiWi degree program.
  • Approval of the examination board. The approval of an engineering examiner for the APL-Ing application only confirms the consistency of the content of the respective course composition from the examiner's point of view. And is considered a professional statement to the WiWi Examination Board, which ultimately decides on the approval of the application.

For this statement, the ING examiner does not have to take into account the relevant content requirements and formal rules for the APL-ING module. This is the task of the applicant. And compliance with these requirements will be checked later in the course of processing by the WiWi Examinations Office before approval.

  • The approval is valid for 2 semesters (starting with the semester in which the approval was granted by the examiner). In addition, there is a basic entitlement to take the approved module examination only as long as there is an examination offer for it.

Attention in Bachelor's and Master's degree programs: The APL-ING module is not intended for integrating courses or modules that are offered exclusively in the Bachelor's or Master's degree program into the other degree program in this way. Applications with such courses/modules will therefore not be approved.

Content design/demarcation
Increasingly, engineering faculties are offering courses with non-technical, often economics-related content. This supplement to the technical education of their students, which makes sense from an engineering point of view, is not suitable for the degree programs of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (also applies to courses offered in the fields of law, medicine, natural sciences, etc.). For this reason, the Examination Board does not approve such courses. The same applies in general to all courses whose content overlaps too much with corresponding courses offered at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics.

Procedure for submitting an application

For the approval of an APL Engineering module, an application form and then print it out in the "decorative version"

The list of courses, the module name (in German and English) and the information on the examination examination procedure entered on the application form must be confirmed by the responsible ING examiners as specified above. The responsible module examiner ensures that the individual courses of the module complement each other in a meaningful way and that no inconsistent selection of individual examinations is combined.

By countersigning the application, the responsible examiner also certifies that the examination can be taken as presented and that the information on the courses in the application is correct.

The application form signed by the Ing. examiners is then submitted together with

  • a current transcript of records
  • and - for examinations that are not included in any WIWI module handbook - an excerpt from the relevant KIT module handbook

by e-mail as a pdf attachment to pruefungssekretariat∂wiwi.kit.edu to the Examinations Office of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. Processing time: Maximum 14 days. After approval, you will be notified by e-mail with further information.

After approval, the individual achievements in the APL-Ing module are stored in the student's study plan and can therefore be registered via the system. As approval and registration in the system cannot be carried out at short notice before examinations, the application should be submitted at least 8 weeks before the first examination in the module.

Special regulations

  • for APL-ING module: "Regenerative Energies": Attention: From now on (July 2022) new regulation for all APL-Ing applications for this area that have not yet been approved: There is already a coordinated offer for Master-WiIng students from various engineering institutes: ETI, IAM, IAH, LTI. Students who wish to take an APL engineering module according to these specifications do not need a printout from the module handbook for the selected course when submitting their application. In addition, there is no need to name a module examiner and his or her signature for the module applied for as proof of subject-specific approval. However, for the examinations selected from the list, the relevant examiner must confirm the subject-specific approval of the course assignment on the application by signing and dating it.

_______________

Important after completion of the APL Engineering module: APL-Ing modules are entered into the system manually. As the module examination rules are different, no rules are stored for them. This means that the system does not recognize when the module examination has been completed. After completion of the module examination (= booking of all successfully completed module components and their grades in the system), it is therefore necessary that we receive the corresponding notification from the students - especially if it is urgent. We will then ensure that the module grade is generated. The best way to do this is to send an e-mail to pruefungssekretariat(at)wiwi.kit.edu.
